Alpha Code Practice Tool
Here's a practice tool to review bird 4-letter alpha codes. This generator will quiz you on over 350 species that can be found in the eastern U.S. (some expected, some rare — and with more of a northeastern bias). Remember that codes should be all capital letters, but particularly on smartphones, lowercase or mixed case are often used for convenience, so this tool will accept any capitalization — so feel free to use all-lowercase for easier entry while practicing.
If you are struggling with these, you may want to review the LycoBirds Quick Start Guide to Alpha/Banding Codes.
Now updated with all of the taxonomic/name changes for 2025. Note that while eBird split Yellow Warbler and Whimbrel, the AOS did not yet, so you'll see them here with the "old" name and code if you are used to eBird's taxonomy.
Note: you can use the "Check Answer" button or the enter/return key on your keyboard to submit your response for each. It will randomly pick species from the list, so you can continue as long as you want.
